Welcome to this self-guided walk through Aztalan, a roughly 1,000-year-old village site built by people of the Mississippian culture along the Crawfish River. Early European-American settlers who found the earthworks in the 1830s mistakenly linked them to the Aztec civilization and gave the site its present name — the mounds and stockade you'll see are actually the work of Woodland and Mississippian peoples who lived here long before.
